Time zone knowledge

What is a time zone?

The time zone is the time offset on the earth relative to UTC (Coordinated Universal Time). The earth is divided into 24 time zones, each covering about 15 degrees of longitude. This division allows the world to determine local time based on the location of the sun.

UTC coordinates world time

UTC is international standard time, also known as Greenwich Standard Time (GMT). All other time zones are defined relative to UTC, using positive and negative hours to represent the offset.

Daylight saving time

Daylight saving time (DST) is the practice of adjusting the clock forward for an hour in the summer months, with the goal of making better use of daylight. Not all countries and regions implement daylight saving time.

Time zone history

The modern time zone system began with railway development in the late 19th century. In 1884, the International Meridian Conference established a global time zone system based on Greenwich.
